2010 GCC summary
Half a million cross country kilometers
The German Cross Country Championship 2010 is in the books. Altogether 4,414 starts have been recorded, 75,038 laps have been completed and seven fabulous tracks were visited - adding up to 502.754 kilometers in total. The 1.215 riders entered in the series rounded the planet ca. twelve and a half time, or rode to the moon and almost back. That´s mass sports at its best. And the fastest of them all? Mr. Cross Country himself, Simo Kirssi.
Kirssi became the new champ prematurely. The 31-year old BMW rider sealed yet another series win with a third place at the penultimate round in Mühlhausen. But not without drama. A severe thunderstorm turned the perfectly prepared track into a mud pool within minutes. Kirssi´s engine died upon riding through a waterhole only 50 meters away from the finish line. At the very same moment the officials decided to red-flag the race due to safety concerns. The Finn managed to push his bike past the chequered flag to finish third, as fellow countryman Samuli Aro recorded the win ahead of Chris Gundermann.
In a series of stunning performances, Kirssi had turned his season around after a mediocre start. The likeable crowd favourite delightfully accepted the applause of his fans and the congratulations of his rivals.
The series finale in Schefflenz four weeks later belonged to the freshly crowned champ, giving the Scandinavian his fifth win of the campaign. Frenchman Michael Musquin followed two and a half minutes back, while a German trio of Dennis Ullrich, Christian Weiß and Steffen Albrecht rounded out the top five. Weiß earned honours as the best German rider in the series, finishing fourth in the points.
The Expert division in the German Cross Country Championship belonged to Derrick Görner. The Husaberg pilot also clinched the title prematurely. Lars Reuther (KTM), who missed two rounds, and Michael Herrmann (Husqvarna) completed the top three.
It will be interesting to see what the new season has in store. Will BMW kiss their cross country efforts good-bye and return under the Husqvarna umbrella, just as they did in World Enduro? Will Simo Kirssi stick around or getting snatched up by another brand? What about arch rival KTM and their line-up? With all respect, European champ Stefan Svitko and Samuli Aro just don´t have what it takes to beat Kirssi. The Austrian manufacturer is represented by 430(!) riders across all classes, but about a top act? Kawasaki and Yamaha might also be desperate to sign a potential front-runner. And what about off road fixtures such as Husaberg, Gas Gas or Husqvarna. The silly season is going to be a cracker.
Entries for 2011 are accepted since 10 October. The entry fee remains unchanged.
